What Is the Expected Recovery Following Dental Implant Surgery?

At the practice of Dr. John A. Garza, patients have the ability to place and restore dental implants in their smile. Not every dental office offers dental implants, though these tooth replacement options make it possible for patients to restore the appearance of their smile in a permanent, effective manner.

What are dental implants?

When a tooth is lost, it is important to quickly resolve the issue by providing a tooth replacement solutions. While there are several options to choose from, our team may encourage patients to consider the benefits of using dental implants. These metal posts are placed during oral surgery into the jaw bone and function as the lost tooth’s root. The implant is then restored on top using a:

  • Dental crown
  • Dental bridge
  • Denture

The restoration used over the dental implant will vary depending on the needs of that patient. If one tooth needs to be replaced, a dental crown is used. If several teeth need replacement, the dental implant will act as an anchor for either a dental bridge or a full denture. The options are discussed during the initial consultation visit with Dr. John A. Garza.

What can I expect during placement and recovery?

Placing dental implants is an oral surgery procedure that is done right in our practice. X-rays are taken to check the bone health to ensure successful placement and to determine where the implant should be placed to avoid sinus cavities. Then, the dentist makes a hole in the jawbone and places the implant. The gum tissue is sutured and a restoration may be placed over the implant as a temporary cover. Patients can expect the area to heal over several days, while the buildup of bone underneath the gum tissue, a process called osseointegration, occurs over several weeks. Once the dental implant is firmly in place within the jaw bone, patients can then return to the dentist to have their final restorations placed over the abutment of the dental implant to finish the treatment.
