Anxiety and The Dentist

Are you letting fear get in the way of the possibility of having a brighter smile, or a healthier mouth? Some people can’t take advantage of all that we can offer, because they let fear get in the way, and they end up not seeing us at all. But, did you know that there are ways we can help you overcome fear and anxiety about seeing the dentist?
If you are nervous about seeing the dentist, let us know before your visit, or even when you come in. We can make sure to take a little more time to answer questions and clarify what we’re doing. Sometimes understanding a little more can help calm anxiety. If you’re still not so excited about seeing the dentist, you may want to consider asking for something that can help make you feel a little more calm.
Our biology allows fear to heighten our awareness, and it’s probably very helpful when we feel vulnerable in a new city at night. But, that fear doesn’t do us any favors at the dentist. Fear will just lead you to experience every little thing more intensely than if you were relaxed, and your pain may go up. This is because your pain threshold goes down when you’re nervous. If you find yourself so anxious that you avoid seeing the dentist, we may be able to help you overcome that.
Things you may want to try include asking a lot of questions so you are aware of what’s going on, taking anxiety medication, or speaking to a mental health professional to help you overcome your anxiety. In some cases, we may be able to provide nitrous oxide to help mitigate feelings of anxiety.
Once you are comfortable, we will properly numb, or anesthetize, the area we are working on, ensuring that your procedure is pain free. If you feel you may need more time, you can let us know when you are discussing your treatment plan. If you want to learn more about how we can help, give us a call at (480) 539-7979 today.
