Can Braces Cause TMJ Disorder? What the Evidence Says

Patients who develop TMJ symptoms around the time of orthodontic treatment sometimes wonder whether their braces are the cause. Here is what the evidence actually says.

What Is TMJ Disorder?

The TMJ is located directly in front of both ears and connects the jaw to the sides of the head. TMJ disorder occurs when this joint is misaligned or sustains trauma. Established causes include traumatic injuries, bruxism, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and disc dislocation.

Can Braces Cause TMJ Disorder?

Multiple studies have investigated the link between orthodontic treatment and TMJ disorder. The results have been inconsistent, and the possibility of a causal link is considered quite remote by many specialists. Many people with perfectly aligned bites also develop TMJ disorder, suggesting bite alignment alone is only a minor factor.

If you develop TMJ symptoms after getting braces, raise the concern with your orthodontist. Initial pain and headaches when braces are first placed or adjusted is normal. If pain persists beyond a few days, a TMJ evaluation may be appropriate. Note that some orthodontists are not well-trained in the relationship between alignment, bite, and TMJ — choosing a provider who understands this balance is important.

When to Seek Help for TMJ

If you have jaw pain and wear braces, bring it up at your next appointment. If you believe alignment issues may be contributing to your TMJ, a consultation with a dentist trained in TMJ is recommended.
