Can TMJ Cause Nerve Pain? The Trigeminal Nerve & TMJ

TMJ and Nerve Pain: The Role of the Trigeminal Nerve

Face and jaw pain can be excruciating, and even more difficult to manage when the source is unknown. For many patients, the temporomandibular joint is at the root of chronic facial pain. When this hinge-like joint is not functioning properly, it can produce pain, difficulty moving the jaw, and in some cases, nerve-related symptoms throughout the face and head.

TMJ and the Trigeminal Nerve

The trigeminal nerve is one of the most important cranial nerves, transmitting more than half of the total sensory input to the brain. It innervates the teeth, the periodontal ligament, the jaw muscles, and the muscle that tenses the eardrum. Because of this broad innervation, dysfunction in the TMJ can produce pain and symptoms that extend well beyond the jaw.

Trigeminal Neuralgia vs. TMJ: How to Tell the Difference

Symptoms of TMJ disorder and trigeminal neuralgia can overlap, but there are key differences. Initial symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia are limited to pain — if you have non-painful symptoms such as limited jaw movement or tinnitus, you can generally rule out trigeminal neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia produces intense, electric shock-like attacks of pain. TMJ tends to produce a chronic, dull aching. An MRI can help diagnose trigeminal neuralgia by identifying nerve damage or compression.
