TMJ dysfunction can be the cause of jaw pain that many patients overlook or misattribute to other conditions. Without adequate treatment, TMJ issues can become more severe over time. One sign that is sometimes overlooked is facial swelling — and while it may seem unrelated to a jaw joint condition, TMJ disorder can be a contributing cause.

TMJ disorder tends to worsen over time when left untreated. When teeth do not line up properly, the joint capsule between the skull and jawbone can be affected. Detection can be challenging, and some patients experience symptoms for years before receiving an accurate diagnosis. Once recognized, TMJ responds well to treatment.
Symptoms include:
• Painful or inflamed jaw
• Pain in the neck or shoulders
• Tingling or aching sensation in the face
• Swelling on one side of the face
• Ear pain or pain around the ear
• Discomfort when chewing
• Toothaches
• Headaches
• Dizziness
• Hearing loss or ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
• Jaw locking or difficulty opening and closing the mouth
• Clicking or grating sensation
Yes. Inflammation in the temporomandibular joint can spread to surrounding tissues, producing swelling and redness in the cheek and temple regions. Discomfort due to TMJ typically worsens with jaw movement and improves when the jaw is at rest — which can help distinguish it from other causes.
Ice or cold packs applied to the jaw area can reduce inflammation. NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen can help manage both pain and inflammation. Massage of the jaw and neck muscles, along with stress management techniques, can also alleviate symptoms. Facial swelling that is persistent, worsening, or accompanied by fever should be evaluated by a medical or dental professional promptly.
