Same-Day CEREC Crowns & Onlays
Why wait two weeks for a crown when you can walk out with one today? Dr. Garza uses CEREC CAD/CAM technology to design, mill, and bond a custom porcelain crown or onlay in a single appointment at his Gilbert dental practice — no temporary crown, no second visit, no trays or impression material. CEREC restorations are precise to 10 microns (a human hair is 60 microns) and bonded rather than cemented, extending their lifespan two to three times over traditionally placed crowns.
No dentist in Arizona has placed more CEREC onlays than Dr. John A. Garza DDS. That’s not a marketing claim — it reflects over 30 years of investment in mastering this technology and a practice that was among the first in the Southwest to make CEREC same-day restorations a clinical standard rather than an occasional offering.

The CEREC Process — Scan, Design, Mill, Bond
After preparing the tooth, Dr. Garza uses a chairside digital scanner to capture a precise 3D scan of the area — no physical impressions. The scan is used to design the restoration on CEREC software right in the operatory. The design is sent to the in-office milling unit, which fabricates the restoration from a solid block of high-strength porcelain ceramic in approximately 15 minutes. Dr. Garza tries the restoration in, refines the fit and occlusion, and bonds it permanently. Total chairtime is typically under two hours, including preparation and numbing.
CEREC Crowns — Full Coverage When You Need It
A CEREC crown provides complete coverage of the visible tooth structure above the gumline and is recommended when a tooth has been significantly damaged by decay, cracking, a large failing filling, or a root canal. The CEREC crown is fabricated from a single block of monolithic ceramic — meaning no porcelain fused to metal, no layering, no weak interfaces. The result is a strong, natural-looking restoration bonded into place the same day the tooth is prepared.
CEREC Onlays — Conservation First
An onlay is a partial coverage restoration — it covers the damaged cusps of the tooth while preserving the healthy tooth structure a full crown would require removing. When a tooth needs more than a filling but doesn’t need full crown coverage, an onlay is the most conservative solution available. CEREC onlays are bonded with exceptional precision, are indistinguishable from the natural tooth, and last as long or longer than their full-crown alternatives. Dr. Garza’s preference for onlays when clinically appropriate is a reflection of his broader philosophy: preserve natural tooth structure whenever possible.
The CEREC Standard: Precision in One Visit
Traditional lab-fabricated crowns require a physical impression, a temporary restoration, a two-to-three-week lab fabrication period, and a second numbing appointment to seat the final restoration. CEREC eliminates every one of those steps. The final restoration is more precisely fitted, bonded to the tooth rather than cemented over it, and placed the same day the problem is identified. For patients in Gilbert and across the East Valley, that combination of precision and efficiency is why Dr. Garza’s practice has become a destination for patients who have had enough of multiple-appointment crowns. Most PPO insurance plans include partial coverage for crowns and onlays.
Same-Day Crowns After Root Canals
A tooth that has had a root canal is structurally brittle and nearly always requires a crown to prevent fracture. With CEREC technology at this Gilbert practice, it is often possible to perform the root canal and place the permanent CEREC crown in the same appointment or in back-to-back same-day scheduling — eliminating the weeks of risk that come with wearing a temporary crown while waiting for a lab.
Replacing Old Crowns or Failed Restorations
Results at this office are reviewed by a board-certified sleep physician and Dr. Garza together — ensuring the diagnosis is medically rigorous and the treatment plan is informed by both sleep medicine and dental expertise. Dr. Garza partners with Medibyte and Breabon for diagnostic accuracy and equipment quality.
